3 Ways to Practice Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is a state in which you are mindful of how you think, feel, and behave. Observing your feelings and trying to understand them can help you be aware of what causes them, why you react a certain way in various situations, and what tendencies you have. This state of self-awareness is extremely beneficial in all aspects of life, whether it be in work or school. Here are three tips to practice self-awareness.

Mindfulness Meditation

Bringing awareness to yourself, your thoughts, and your surroundings is the practice of mindfulness meditation. This exercise allows for a lot more than just self-awareness, it is proven to be helpful for many things such as losing weight to relieving stress. This practice helps you understand your thoughts and how they work. When you allow your thoughts to flow without trying to restrict them or over-analyze them, it creates space for positivity. Most importantly, it helps you recognize that your thoughts can empower you.

Understand Your Reactions

In order to become more self-aware, it is important to be aware of your reactions. When do you react impulsively? How often does it happen? Answering these questions is the first step in identifying patterns and triggers that will help you change your behavior. Self-awareness is the ability to understand your behavior and ultimately make changes to help you accomplish your goals.

Ask For Feedback

Sometimes you may need to ask for help in order to achieve the level of self-awareness you wish to reach. Ask those close to you for feedback about areas you wish to improve upon. Asking someone else to point out beneficial feedback is a great way to identify things we need to work on. It is also important to take this criticism well as we want to avoid being defensive. Finding ways to improve may be challenging but it’s necessary for growth.

Self-awareness isn’t about incessantly pointing out your flaws or tearing yourself down, it’s about understanding your feelings and thoughts in order to become the best version of yourself possible.
