The Importance of Your Relationships

Our overall happiness has many factors that can contribute to it. Health is one such example. Another one would be our relationships. While it is easy to take for granted, these can help us understand what we value in ourselves and others. Today we want to discuss the importance of our relationships.

Understanding What They Are

One way to define a relationship is that it is a sense of connection between several things. In this instance, it is primarily in reference to people. There are two main types of relationships that we want to cover. The first of which is interpersonal relationships which involve two or more people being connected through various means. This can be a relationship based on a mutual interest or hobby, by association such as fellow students, or even a friendship. There is also something known as an intrapersonal relationship. This can be defined as the relationship you have with yourself. Both of these have their own values associated with them and matter on different scales.

Interpersonal Relationships

Given that we interact with others on a daily basis, having proper relationships with those around you is incredibly important. These can help boost your happiness along with giving you a support system to fall back on. These types of relationships can build a wealth of useful qualities. One of which is the idea of honesty. Honesty is crucial in these types of relationships as it sets a healthy boundary for yourself and those involved. This helps because when you properly communicate your feelings with others, you not only pave the way for a better relationship, but you can be transparent about your own needs as well. Setting boundaries is also good as it lets others know what lines to not cross. Not everyone views relationships the same way but good communication can make things much easier for both parties. Having people in our life to support us along with simply enjoying things can provide us with meaningful interactions and value. Promoting good interactions with friends and family can give us a place to be ourselves while also making them happy.

Intrapersonal Relationships

There is one person that we will always be with and that is ourselves. Establishing a good relationship with yourself is crucial as it shapes how you interact with the world outside you. One way to help with this is to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness helps you be aware of your thoughts along with seeing which aspects we need to work on. If we feel that we aren't being as kind to ourselves as we should be, it may be worth stepping back to try to fix that. In these types of situations, we want to be gentle with the language we use when referring to how we view ourselves. Positive affirmations are good for building up a good relationship with yourself as it leads to other good mental habits. The skills associated with your intrapersonal relationship translate well to other aspects such as your communication skills.

Both of these relationships are necessary to be a well-rounded individual and to make the most out of your interactions with others. While it may take time, these are worth your time as they can help your happiness in a practical manner.
