Social Media: Dos and Don’ts

Social media plays a big part in our lives today. Whether it’s to catch up with the latest celebrity gossip or to view what your family is doing, social media is the main star. In today’s day and age someone might even ask for your Instagram name before wanting to know your actual name. While the popularity of social media is increasing, less and less users are learning how to be safe online. Students specifically need to be cautious of what they post on social media as nothing can be deleted. Here are some dos and don’ts that you should always keep in mind while being active online.

Socializing

Do use these platforms as a great way to reach out to friends and create more friendships, along with networking with businesses and colleges.

Don’t socialize with strangers on social media as you may not know their intentions.

Privacy

Do keep your account private. This leads your information to be safe and only your friends will be able to know what you are doing.

Don’t broadcast your entire life social media. It is understandable to want to inform your friends what you’re up to, however sharing your location might be dangerous.

Hackers

Do double check what you are clicking on. Whether it was sent to you or an ad you crossed upon, hackers have many tricks which they use to get your information. Always check if the link or file is safe.

Don’t click on links or files which you don’t know. Hackers may get your personal information including credit cards, address, cellphone number, etc. if you allow them access to your phone.

Students specifically need to be cautious of what they post on social media as nothing can be deleted.

These are just some of the ways students can practice safety when using social media. Social media can be a powerful tool to help share new ideas and experiences within education and should be used wisely.
