How Teachers Can Be Good Role Models

Behind every student is a teacher there to help them achieve their full potential. Teachers can help inspire students along with serving as a guide. Let's take a look at how teachers can be good role models.

They Offer a Shoulder to Lean on

Many teachers value what's going in their students lives and more often than not, they will offer an ear for those who need additional help. Sometimes students may need help in their courses and a teacher offer direction for that. It can be something like creating a new study guide to integrate in the course curriculum for every student or a specialized one. Teachers can offer counseling for students struggling by listening to them along with providing resources to help them. Ideally teachers want to establish positive rapport as students may rely on that for letters of recommendation in the future.

They Genuinely Care About What They Teach

What separates a good teacher from an outstanding one is that they are passionate about what they teach. While there may be instances where teachers are expected to follow certain aspects of a curriculum, great teachers know when to add their own personality and creativity into the mix. Not only does this help with overall engagement, but it can make the day to day class lectures more fun and unique. Good role models recognize that the power of positive influence can go a long way and that translates to the enthusiasm teachers put into their subject matter.

They Know When to Let Students be Independent

There's a time and place for hands on learning and many teachers know when to switch their teaching style. A good role model understands that people that respect them will ultimately need to think for themselves. This also applies for teaching as educators want to make sure that their students will be prepared for the real world. One way teachers can do this is to give dedicated time for independent class assignments to help foster this mentality. Teachers can offer assistance to those who need additional help and do reviews on what elements students may need to work on.

Great Teachers Are Also Great Mentors

While its easy to assume from a students perspective that teachers have all the answers, more often than not that isn't the case. Many teachers are still learning how to best hone their craft and need to do so to truly improve the quality of their teaching. A great teacher knows when they need to dedicate time to practice new techniques along with doing proper research for their lectures. Putting yourself in the mentorship position allows you to learn alongside students which can ultimately lead to a greater understanding for both sides.

Learning From Each Other

Being a good role model or teacher can be a lifelong journey. We feel that all of these things are just some of the many ways teachers can improve. The most important part is that both good role models and good teachers recognize when it is time to teach, and when it is time to learn.
