Intrapersonal Learning

There are many different forms of learning and being able to adapt to each style can be extremely useful. One of the ones we want to cover today is intrapersonal learning, which focuses on the ability to learn by oneself. Let's dive into what this is and why it matters.

Learning by Oneself

Intrapersonal learning primarily revolves around the process of learning by oneself. These types of learners don't require larger groups to operate efficiently. This can be good for a multitude of reasons and the first of which involves motivation. Motivation is something that is deeply personal and affects us in unique ways. What helps one person get through a task is going to be different than how someone else does something. Being mindful of this is important since some people get their best work done when given the time to truly immerse themselves in an activity. This type of learning style isn't for everyone but there are many instances where we will need to adopt techniques from this. We won't always have someone there to help us with every problem, and learning how to stand on our own can help us greatly.

Personal Values

When we consider intrapersonal learning we also need to consider some of the values that coincide with this. This learning style gives us a means of introspection that can help us discover what we love to learn. One great example of this is that intrapersonal learners often find their time is being spent looking into topics further. This can be seen with additional research along with branching out from the initial topic into other similar fields. Individual-based learners value that information is holistic and that there is an overarching sense of connection when it comes to each topic. They recognize the history behind things and use that as a means of enjoying the learning experience in a manner that can only be done by themselves.

Why we Need This

Personal effectiveness is something that can help us far beyond the classroom. Ultimately we want to be lifelong learners that are able to discover and teach ourselves even when others can't be there for us. Intrapersonal learning gives us an avenue to do this and recognizes that to perform at our best, we need to take action and know when to ask for help, and when to work on something for ourselves. Independence is a good quality to have as it lets us integrate choice into our lives which is something that intrapersonal learning does best. Choice matters with your education and being able to have moments where you prioritize self-discovery can be both exciting and crucial for a growth mindset. Yes there are areas where you will want to have someone guide you and there are equally as many areas where you will need to use personal experience as a stepping stone. Both of these are valid and can give us new creative ways to express ourselves along with how we like to approach learning.
