Why Coaching And Mentoring is Worth Your Time

Trying to solve things by yourself all the time can be challenging since we don't always have all the answers. Rather than doing this, another approach is seeking out help for things. Two of the most common types of this are coaching and mentoring, and each of them come with different benefits. Today we want to talk about why these are worth your time.

Coaching

Coaching is one of the best ways for students to help build both their confidence and skills in and outside of school. There are coaches available for a wide variety of subjects with one of the more common being athletic coaching. This focuses mainly on sports and can have a unique perspective depending on who is in charge. Understanding that each coach is unique is a key part of this since some of them may be more pragmatic while others may be more interested in conveying the ideals behind something. Coaching also extends beyond sports and can even cover general topics for life. Both of these examples give students someone very experienced with these subjects to help guide them throughout any challenges they may face. For example, a life coach can give students advice on how to work through an interpersonal problem they are going through. Because coaches have this sort of background in managing multiple scenarios, they're often best suited for this.

Mentoring

Mentoring is a bit different from coaching because it changes the dynamic. Whereas coaching is effectively similar to a student-teacher relationship, mentoring allows both sides to learn from one another. This is important because it can highlight that there is value in finding new solutions together. One example of this is known as peer mentoring which allows students to work with one another to talk about any problems they're going through. This is great because it can help open the line of communication and make it so that even more reserved people can feel comfortable expressing themselves. Mentoring is a great approach because it considers the emotional context behind seeking out help along with the ability to improve oneself. There are pros to each approach and deciding which one suits you better is good to understand.

It's All About Improvement

Improvement is the driving idea behind both coaching and mentoring. It takes a lot of courage and putting one's ego aside to be able to ask for help. This is because we usually feel that we have to do a lot of things alone in order to appear independent. While being self-sufficient is a good thing, and we ideally want to be lifelong learners, we also need to accept that asking for help is both good and necessary. Reaching out to others is a great way to demonstrate self-care since it respects our social and emotional needs as people. Improvement is much easier when we have people who are willing to help us out with their prior knowledge and being able to work alongside the people we care about can make a substantial difference.
