Why We Need To Read Outside of School

As one of the cornerstones of education, reading is something that is part of every school's core curriculum. Reading is essential in our fast moving world and more often than not, many students may find themselves uninterested in reading outside of school. Today we want to take some time to address why we need to change this.

It's Crucial For Success

When it comes to setting yourself up for success after school, reading is crucial. Communication is the primary means of us interacting with one another and it is usually done either through speech or by the written word. While we may not always have the means to be able to talk to someone face to face, we have many means of communicating with someone non verbally. Text messages along with emails are common means of doing so and both of them involve reading. This applies not just for school, but for work as well. You may need to be aware of a key email from college or for work and being up to speed for reading can help you finish it in a more efficient manner. Not only will this do the necessary things faster, but it can free up more time.

It Expands The Mind

Reading outside of school can be a great avenue to help open yourself up to new concepts and ideas. Sometimes a school curriculum may not offer subjects that appeal to everyone. The beauty to this is that it can help you understand what interests you as a reader. For instance, if you are into philosophy, you can opt to read more content from that area of interest. The same holds true for other subjects as well. Let's say you are in an English class and you are tasked with reading a short story from an author. Perhaps the class only intends on reading one story from them but you wind up really enjoying it. That interest can be taken outside of the classroom to further explore concepts covered by their previous works.

It's Enjoyable

Simply put, reading is an enjoyable and great activity. It gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in worlds far beyond the scope of our own lives. It can let you step into someone else's shoes and experience the world through a different lens. It fosters empathy which can help you relate toward others. Reading gives you the chance to discover more about the world around you in a safe way that embraces creativity. It can enlighten you about different aspects of history and culture and even grow a greater appreciation for art itself. It can give you something to discuss in class or even among friends. Reading can help people find themselves through words.

These are just some of the many ways why we need to read outside of school. Not only does it offer so many practical benefits but the transformative nature of it can help influence lives in a positive way.
