Using Emotional Psychology to Help

Our emotions are a large part of who we are and being able to understand and manage them properly can help in many ways. Today we want to do a deep dive into the emotional branch of psychology and how it can change our life for the better.

Understanding Yourself Better

Learning about who we are is along with the journey of self-discovery is something that can last a lifetime. One way that we can learn more about ourselves is through our emotions. Breaking down how we feel in a situation can give us better context to how we feel overall. For example, if a high grade on a test makes us feel good we can ask ourselves why that is. Is it a reflection of the effort we put into something? Or is it simply because we're happy to have performed well? Both of these are valid and can give us insight into how our emotions affect our thinking. Likewise, we also need to be mindful of how we feel after a difficult situation. If something makes us feel anxious we can use that knowledge to analyze why we feel that way. In some instances, eustress, or good stress, can keep us alert while also being excited about new events. Understanding yourself gives you a sense of peace in that it lets you know who you are and what you stand for.

Your Emotions And Motivation

Knowing how we use intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can have an effect on our emotions. Intrinsic rewards such as the satisfaction we get from honing a skill give us the means to focus on the process rather than the end goal itself. This is good as we can foster a sense of happiness by being in the present which can give us a newfound appreciation for the things we do. Extrinsic motivation on the other hand is usually defined by receiving something outside of yourself such as a financial reward. These are effective in that they give us something to work towards and can offer us a different sense of happiness. Both are necessary when it comes to our emotions and knowing how they affect us can give us a better understanding of how we feel.

Emotions And Positive Action

Our thoughts and emotions are the catalyst for positive action and this is best seen with how we choose to react to different situations. Our emotions are a great way to empower us to make the right decisions and even with what would be considered a negative emotion can help us greatly. We can use sadness as a means of promoting self-care which can then transform into empathy. We can use anger as a means to enact positive change within our lives and to do the right thing. We can use happiness to foster a sense of gratitude and expressing that outwardly. All of our emotions matter and knowing how and when to use the effectively can make all the difference.
