Finding Your Motivation

There are many different things that drive our actions in our day to day lives. The driving force behind this is often the motivation we have towards it. This can vary greatly as far as how effective it can be in the long run. Sometimes we need to push ourselves to get something done in the short term but it may not always be sustainable. Thankfully there are better ways to work through things than simply relying on willpower. Today we want to talk about why it's important to find your motivation.

Review Your Goals

Goals are both an end point and something to work towards. How we choose to get there and the perspective we have on our goals is an important thing to consider. Many of us simply want to hit the end point so we can embrace the fruits of our labor. While this is admirable, if we're too focused on the end result we may lose the will to work towards it in our day to day activities. Motivation can be challenging at times since it can ebb and flow. One thing that can help is by rewarding yourself with small things along the way when you hit certain milestones. It can be something as simple as getting your favorite food when you get a certain grade, or simply being in good standing with your peers. Our goals should be a means of empowering ourselves so we can have the internal motivation needed to reach them.

Understand What Drives You

As individuals, each of us have different things that motivate us. Some people may be motivated by the reward itself or it could be that the process itself is intrinsically it's own reward. It's good to be aware of what exactly drives your motivation. Higher education is a great example of this because the motivation can vary for this depending on the person. Some people may value a more financially stable major that they want to work towards. Others may find motivation working towards something that makes them passionate. Some people try to meet in the middle for both of these. Each of these is valid depending on the person since they may place a different sort of weight on this aspect of their lives.

Recognize The Type of Motivation You Need

There are several different kinds of motivation and each of them serves a purpose. Intrinsic motivation is doing something simply because of the satisfaction of doing it. Extrinsic motivation is doing something with the intent of receiving a reward for accomplishing it. Different situations require unique approaches since there are instances where one or a combination of these is more fitting. Extrinsic motivation is great when it comes to getting us to do things that we may not be as enthused about. This can help us by giving us something we can tangibly look forward to at the end of something difficult. Intrinsic motivation can help keep us more stable for long-term things and give us the ability to find joy in most activities. This is often seen in our hobbies where we do them simply because we love them. Motivation comes in several forms and applying them properly can make a world of difference.
