Focusing on Your Classes in High School

A very large component of college preparation involves your grades from high school. While it may be tempting to dedicate the bulk of your time to other elements such as extracurricular activities, it's good to focus on the fundamentals. Your classes and your performance within them can be the most influential aspect when it comes to being accepted into a college. A good grade point average along with other aspects such as advanced placement classes can help give you an advantage when it comes to college admissions. This is mainly due to the fact that many schools require a minimum grade point average to stay enrolled or even for entry. Learning this sort of discipline early can promote good habits for college as there will be less hand holding and better grades will soon become the norm for success. This isn't to say that you should completely neglect other aspects such as extracurricular activities. It's good to have a healthy balance for that as they can enrich you as a person and give you the confidence and mental fortitude to help within your classes.

Striking The Right Balance For School and Work

For many students, college isn't free unless you have scholarships to assist you, and even then one could argue that the time spent to gain the scholarships is considered work as well. Many students will ultimately have to have to find the time to work along with maintaining their grades. Students who work during high school may find themselves having to rearrange their schedules depending on the availability of their courses. Certain jobs may not give enough flexibility and the student may need to work around that. With that said, both are important in that school is preparing students to help them work in the field they desire most along with their current work funding that goal. If a student begins to feel overwhelmed they may need to request time off or potentially check in with their job or professor so they can make an agreement that works on both sides. Proper communication and awareness of how you feel are key to making this balance work.

Mentally Prepping Yourself

It's easy to assume that college and everything surrounding it can seem very difficult, but half of it involves bringing the right mindset. Giving yourself the space to grow along with some downtime can help you handle daily tasks such as homework or commuting. While we do advocate for giving the proper amount of time and effort into studies, we also recommend making the most out of friendships and relationships with those you meet in college. This includes communicating with professors to help establish good rapport which will inevitably help you for a future letter of recommendation along with empathizing with those who help teach thousands of other students.
