Creating Positive Spaces

Our environment has a massive impact on the quality of our lives along with how well we're able to get schoolwork done. Being in a place where we feel comfortable being ourselves can help us stay more relaxed and at peace. In order to do this though, we need to be proactive with the type of environment we're in. That's why today we want to focus on how we can create positive spaces in our own lives.

Decluttering Your Space

The visual element of our environment matters a lot more than we think. While yes it is possible to work in a messy room, it's also hard to ignore the fact that we might feel distracted as a result. When there are clothes on the floor or simply a lot of visual clutter going on, it can take up space in our minds subconsciously. A better approach is to take a day to clean up the space that you're in so you can be more at ease with what's around you. A good study environment is one that is conducive to learning and more often than not, a clean space falls under this. The key thing about positive spaces is that they need to be positive for our senses as well since they contribute to how we experience the world around us.

How Sound Plays a Role

Sound plays a key role in our environment as well. One of the most common reasons people recommend the library is because it is quiet. A quiet space is good because it allows us to be at ease with our thoughts so we can focus on the task at hand. With that said, sound can contribute to a more positive space when it's something we can affect. A good pair of headphones or speakers in a room can make getting through a tough assignment much more enjoyable since we have something that can motivate us. The key thing here is having the agency to decide how loud or how private the music we're listening to is. This gives us a sense of control and can empower us in its own way. It's also good because we can adjust it to the pace of what we're doing instead of being reliant on the ambient music we hear elsewhere to do so for us.

Comfort Matters Too

Last but not least we want to feel comfortable for it to truly be a positive space. Some people might feel more at home in a cafe instead of a library, others might prefer doing their studying in the park surrounded by nature. All of these are valid and it's up to us as an individual to recognize what we value in a positive space. Building self-awareness is core to this mindset since it trains us to review what it is that makes us feel cozy in our space. Our ideal positive space is one that makes us feel excited to take on new assignments while also acting as a reprieve from stress.
