Putting Yourself First

There are many instances where we will need to consider how we treat ourselves in relation to other factors. Putting yourself first has a lot of positive aspects to it which is why today we want to discuss why this matters and how to implement it.

Self-Love

One of the best ways to put yourself first is to establish a sense of self-love. Too often do we give too much energy to things outside of our control and consequently feel drained by doing so. Bringing ourselves back inward and focusing on what we are capable of doing is one way to regain our energy. Self-love specifically is the practice of being able to care for who you are. Your feelings are one such way to practice this sort of awareness. Being mindful of our feelings can help us tune into how different things affect us. A good example of this is whether we feel frustrated after not getting enough sleep. This can motivate us to make better changes for ourselves that are conducive to our well-being. Mindfulness is good as it lets us be more introspective as it provides us with the same amount of warmth that we deserve.

Setting up Boundaries

Another key component of putting yourself first involves setting up boundaries. This can be seen in many different areas. One of the more common ones would be having boundaries for your time. It can be easy to say yes to every event that comes up as we don't want to feel that we are missing out on things. While seizing opportunity is good, there eventually needs to be a cutoff point for how long these things take. Instead of saying yes to everything, take time to consider how long of a commitment something will be along with how it will make you feel. Your time is valuable and in order to put yourself first, you need to consider how it will affect you in the long run. Emotional boundaries are another thing to consider. While it is good to listen to others there will be times where we won't have the emotional capacity to be able to process information in an empathetic manner. It's instances like these where we need to take a step back and consider our own thoughts first and get ourselves into the right headspace.

Working With Yourself

The last major component of putting yourself first involves being able to work with who you are as an individual. This is crucial because it recognizes that everyone is different and incentivizes us to find the routine that works for us. One good example of this would be finding a hobby that you enjoy. This can be something related to the arts or a physical activity for example. Learning about what you're interested in is a good thing as it allows you to spend your time in a manner that makes you happy. Putting yourself first can promote positive feelings about yourself which can then be used to make better choices throughout your life.
