Values And Their Importance

There are many things that can motivate us throughout our lives. Sometimes it’s something as simple as trying to get a good grade in a class, while other times we may want to hit a certain goal with exercise. One helpful form of motivation is our values and today we want to discuss why these are important.

Values And Motivation

Motivation can best be broken down into two different forms. Intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation revolves around the idea that the idea of doing something provides us with our own sort of internal reward. Extrinsic motivation is formed around a reward that is directly provided to us after doing a task. Our values can affect both of these. A great example of this would be how you view the type of work you're doing. Your values can be based on putting in your best effort to receive money or a reward in order to use that in a manner that helps either you or someone else. An extrinsic reward isn't bad, it's simply a reflection on what we can tangibly be given. Likewise, our values can also reflect how we feel about intrinsic rewards. A good value system can steer us toward doing volunteer activities because it helps others who are in need. Both of these can help with motivation in their own manner.

Values And Integrity

Values and integrity both go hand in hand as concepts. When we think of values one of the most immediate concepts that come to mind is how it ties into someone’s behavior. Someone with good values often has qualities of generosity, empathy, and confidence within themselves. All of these are in tune with our integrity as a person. People who are trustworthy often have a good moral compass and by extension good values. Being aware of what it is that you value is important because there are some things that can affect our actions. For example, if you value being the best at your craft, how you choose to get there is a reflection of your values. Being mindful of others and working alongside them while being aware of your personal goals is one such way to do so. Our integrity is a reflection of who we are and having good values can embrace our better qualities.

Values And Personal Growth

Values are an essential part of our growth as a person as they will be tested time and again. A great example of this are values within relationships since many of us have different feelings regarding this. One person may value open and honest communication whereas someone else may hesitate at the risk of hurting someone’s feelings. Some people may prefer to be more direct while others are more subtle because of past experiences. Each of these helps convey a different sort of value system and understanding that is important because we have to keep in mind others’ feelings. Our values are a means of expressing how we feel towards the world and being equally receptive can help make a positive difference.
