The Value of Social-Emotional Learning

There are many unique learning styles out there and one that is extremely effective is social-emotional learning. The main benefit of this is that it can make us more competent when it comes to enhancing our relationships along with meeting new people. Today we want to discuss the value of this type of learning and where it can fit into our daily lives.

Improving Self-Awareness

One of the core skills social-emotional learning aims to teach is self-awareness. Oftentimes many of the situations we encounter can be alleviated with a healthy amount of self-awareness. One way this applies is knowing whether our actions are contributing to a positive sense of well-being or if they're working against us. Meditation is a great example of this since it can help us foster this by simply slowing down our thoughts and reflecting on what happened. Recognizing that our own point of view isn't always correct is an important part of the process. Given that we live in a social world, we need to be aware of how our actions and behaviors impact ourselves and those around us. Thinking before we act can help with this and make life easier overall.

Being Proactive in Relationships

The best relationships we have are the ones we're proactive in. Social-emotional learning can help us make the most out of these by teaching us how to make the most out of them. Learning alongside our peers is helpful since they're at a similar point in life as ourselves. School effectively gives us an environment where we're able to foster these relationships through the use of group assignments and team sports. Both of these have value because they teach us how to work together in both a professional setting and a more leisurely setting. Learning through play is essential since we're able to share a sense of camaraderie with one another. Likewise fostering healthy relationships within a more serious setting can teach us the necessary skills for communication and networking. All relationships take time and it's up to us to put in our part to improve them.

Improving Positive Behaviors

Working towards more positive behaviors is one of the major things that social-emotional learning steers us towards. Our habits form the basis for our day-to-day routine and we want those to be aligned with our best interests. Forming good habits can take time and in order to do that we want to have multiple areas of our lives contribute to them. Some good social habits we can form are listening proactively since that can make communication easier along with learning how to be okay with expressing ourselves. Positive behaviors are often formed in positive environments and school can help us with this. Social-emotional learning is worth considering since it can make us more effective in many areas of our lives both inside and outside the classroom.
