Compassion

As students, there are many different qualities we will find ourselves learning as we go through our lives. One of these is compassion and this is something that is closely tied to our emotional health and intelligence. Today we want to discuss why this is important and how to strive towards this quality.

Compassion Starts With You

One of the most important things when it comes to compassion is that it starts with treating ourselves well. It may be tempting to want to give your all to someone else but if you aren't giving an equal amount of care to yourself then it is that much harder to display that kindness to others. Self-love is important because it builds up confidence within yourself along with being able to practice this sort of kindness. One mindset shift we can use to help with this is viewing ourselves as our own best friend. This can make it easier to be able to do things that represent the same amount of love and kindness that we would demonstrate to someone we really care about. Giving ourselves the space to show that we love who we are along with practicing this sort of awareness can make it that much easier to show compassion to others.

Showing You Care to Others

Compassion is a combination of our actions along with our emotions toward someone. Actions, in this case, are necessary as it is a tangible demonstration that we care about someone else. A small but valuable example of compassion can be something as simple as holding the door open for someone. This gesture, while seemingly small conveys that even if you don't know someone you still care about them to make their lives easier. Little things like this make the world go round and spread happiness in a manner that is accessible. Buying someone a gift is another way to show this as it lets someone know that you value them. Listening to someone is also a good way to demonstrate compassion. Something as simple as hearing how a friend is doing after a tough experience is not just good but it helps solidify the trust between you.

Why it Matters

Of all the life skills out there compassion is one of the most essential. Being able to care for others is necessary given that we are inherently social. It gives us the means to show that we care about people on a deeper level. This is good as it can help us feel more connected to others and establish a loving support system. Kindness and compassion are needed as they can give us the tools needed to practice inner confidence along with being able to work on gratitude. Gratitude for others matters because we will find ourselves working with many different individuals throughout our lives and the bonds we make can make us stronger. Compassion is one such way to strengthen these ties and can lead to a more meaningful life when properly taken care of.
