Life Lessons Outside The Classroom

Having a strong desire to learn is something that we should have even when we're not in school. Every day presents an opportunity to see things in a new light along with educating ourselves about how the world works. Some lessons can only be learned when we're not in school and today we want to talk about three things that fall under this.

Being Self-Sufficient

Part of growing older requires us to be more self-sufficient with our needs. The older we get the less reliant we are on our parents to provide things for us such as transportation for example. In order to stand up on our own we need to step outside of our comfort zone. Things such as buying our own food or a car for example are two signs that we're able to be more self-sufficient. This is good because some students may want to do things such as study abroad or travel more. This comes with its own forms of responsibility that we need to take into account since our well-being depends on it. Getting enough exercise, sleep, and taking care of ourselves is crucial since it ensures that we're healthy in multiple ways.

Financial Discipline

Managing money is another element that is best seen outside of school. College is a great time to help with this since depending on what route we take, we may need to get a part-time job. Not only does this give us the chance to manage our finances better, but it can be vital for time management as well. We only have so much time in the day and rather than letting it go to waste, we need to be efficient. Having our money safe by putting it in a savings account is a great thing to do. It can teach us the value of delayed gratification and help us make choices that allow us to get what we want while saving for the future. Like many things in life that we learn, financial discipline is a habit that needs to be built. Sometimes we have to say no now so we can say yes later and sometimes we need to take risks to see a payoff.

Finding Fulfillment

Personal life satisfaction is something that only we can determine. While it's easy to say that one specific thing can make us feel fulfilled, it varies depending on who you ask. Learning what it is that brings you joy can be done both in and outside of the classroom. We do need to be open-minded and willing to see all the unique possibilities that are out there since we never know what may make us happy. It can be something simple such as a movie that challenges you to rethink your day-to-day life. Or it can be something as special as a trip around the world seeing and interacting with various cultures.
