Optimizing Your School Day

Being independent is an extremely helpful quality to have in life since it makes many aspects a lot easier to work through. One element of this is being able to manage your time efficiently. School has many moving parts to it and with a bit of practice, we can make things go by smoothly. Today we want to cover some ways that we can optimize our school day.

Use a Planner

Knowing what to do and when to do things is essential if we want to optimize our school day. One of the best tools for this is a planner or even a notes app. Writing down our tasks is important since it helps us understand all of our given responsibilities. We may have homework along with extracurriculars that need to be attended, or even a social gathering. Rather than simply keeping all this information in our heads, having it in a space we can easily access can help keep us on track. We can go a step further and set alarms for things that need to be done in a certain time frame too. Small things like these add up and can keep us focused on school.

Figure Out What's Urgent

While there are many things we need to do in school, some are more urgent than others. A good example of this is making it to our next class on time. This is something we can't miss since we wouldn't want to be tardy. Another example would be finishing our homework before it's due. Sometimes we might have several days to do this if the assignment is due later in the week. We can opt to bump it up higher in our priority list if there's less time to do that, otherwise, we can gradually work on it. Some things also take less urgency but are still worth planning for, such as talking to a counselor about your path toward higher education. Certain things need to be accounted for throughout the day and we may have to adjust depending on the situation. For example, if a family member needs help with something we may need to set some time aside for that. Flexibility is key for this since it can let us adjust as needed.

Include Breaks

Breaks are an essential part of optimizing our day. A common misconception is that if we aren't being productive we're wasting time which couldn't be further from the truth. Resting is effective since it gives us the much-needed space to recover after a long series of tasks. School can be challenging at times with its rigorous curriculum and students need to slow down when they start to feel burnt out. Meditation, physical exercise, spending time with friends, and enjoying a creative outlet are just some of the ways we can take our breaks. Each of these help contributes to our overall sense of well-being too. Making the most out of your school day is essential, but it needs to be tempered with respect to our own needs too.
