Why Morals Matter

Understanding your values along with your morals is an essential life skill. Your morals affect a wide variety of aspects of your life which is all the more reason why they are important. Today we want to take some time to discuss why morals matter.

They Influence Decision Making

In simple terms, morals are a set of beliefs and ideals that can be derived from experience or can be a set of conduct that determines what is acceptable. Our morals have a large impact on how we decide many of our choices throughout school. A good example of this can involve how we handle responsibilities for example. Ideally, we want to be mindful of our own needs along with those of others. Making a decision that causes unnecessary grief or distress for someone such as ignoring homework or being rude to someone would be an example of misaligned morals. Not only does this hurt your own grades but it can also affect how others perceive you. An example of something that would be more positively aligned morals would be helping a friend in a study group after class if they are struggling with the material. In this instance, while it would take some time, you would ultimately be helping someone you care about which is both positive and constructive.

They Shape You as an Individual

Your morals, along with how you treat others and view yourself are some of the greatest factors that shape you as a human being. Morals can help show you right from wrong and define how you interact with the world around you. Understanding who you are also plays a role in this. Oftentimes students may be given labels such as a troublemaker or problematic but in reality, we don't have to abide by these. With a good moral compass, we can avoid these negative perceptions and find a new path that allows us to be our best possible self without the need for labels such as these. This is crucial in that we can choose to define ourselves on our own terms rather than allowing others to do that for us. We do need to give value to others’ feelings and thoughts as we wouldn't want to dismiss their viewpoint. With that in mind, we equally need to be cognizant of our own feelings as they matter just as much in our moral standing.

They Give You a Good Frame of Reference

Good morals are very similar to a code of ethics, they are there to rely on when you need them the most. The benefit to this is that they can help you with many choices to help condense certain issues that might not be complex. On the flip side of this, there are a good amount of instances where the line isn't so clear. With that said, having them as a frame of reference or as a base to go off of can help with this. This gives us the means to diverge from our traditional way of thinking and let other perspectives shine through while also valuing why we feel the way we do. Our moral code can allow for new viewpoints which are key for developing our minds.

Our morals can help us in many different ways and they are something that impacts many parts of our lives. Everyone abides by their own code of morals along with following universal ones. With all that in mind, we hope to see students use their morals as a means to positively make a difference in the world.
