Solving Problems With Metacognition

Metacognition is the act of analyzing your thought processes and reflecting on the way you think. This allows you to take control of your thoughts and to make changes as you learn more about yourself and the world. This self analysis can prove to be extremely beneficial when it comes to problem solving. Although it may not seem like it, these two concepts are very closely intertwined. Today we want to use metacognition as a means of solving problems.

Using Self-Awareness

Being able to problem-solve, and ultimately grow as a person, means being aware of your abilities. Metacognition comes with a very high level of self-awareness that will prove useful in situations where objectivity is necessary. When we’re trying to solve a problem, or avoid one, being aware of your own thinking process, and the ways in which it might be flawed, will help you understand your approach to the situation. Objectively, you’re able to determine whether the method you’re using to solve this problem is the correct one or if you need to reassess the problem and your approach.

Understanding The Problem

Being an effective problem-solver requires an understanding of the issue and what it will take you to solve it. You can’t expect yourself to fix something that you don’t understand, which is why it’s so important to take time to review and reflect on the matter at hand. Once you feel confident in your grasp of the subject, you can begin to consider all your options and strategies at your disposal. Only you know what you’re capable of handling, meaning you're the only person that can decide how well equipped you are to solve a problem and the ways in which you can, or cannot, do that.

Know Your Strengths

In order to problem solve we need to be aware of what we are capable of. Understanding what kind of learner we are is one way to know our strengths. Kinesthetic learners for example benefit best from hands on activities and will thrive in those types of environments. This carries over for other learning styles and it can help empower us when it comes to metacognitive problem solving. Metacognition will help you do more than just understand your thoughts and become a better learner, it will allow you to actively solve problems with said knowledge.
