How Involved Should a Parent Be in A Students Education

Parent involvement in a student’s education is critical to a well-rounded and better quality experience for school. Both teachers and parents want what’s best for a student, so why not work together? Parent attendance at school events such as parent-teacher conferences and open houses are good ways to help. Constant communication between student, teacher, and parent, and at-home engagement lead to higher test scores, attendance, self-esteem, and graduation rates. Today we want to take a look at how involved parents should be in a student’s education.

Students Benefit From Parent-Teacher Relationships

There are many reasons why parents may not be as involved in a student's education as they could be, but students benefit incredibly from close parent-teacher relationships. A good way to build this relationship is through parents attending open houses and parent-teacher conferences. These events are an ideal way to discuss a student’s progress and for teachers and parents to come together and collaborate on how to help a student’s education. This exchange of ideas and opinions not only creates a more open communication line between parent and teacher but it encourages transparency about what’s being taught at school and what a student does with that knowledge at home.

Parents Can Help at Home

Parents should also be willing to take some time at home to help their children with their homework or review their responsibilities for the day to make sure they are on track. This is especially helpful for younger students who might need that extra help at home to understand the concepts taught during the school day. If a child knows that they can rely on their parents to support them and help them, it helps give them a sense of security.

Involvement Matters

An aware and active parent does not translate to an overbearing parent. Parent involvement is critical in a student's education, but there are limits. Once a student reaches a certain age, parents should place a lot more trust in their child and their ability to be responsible for their own education. That does not mean that parents should stop communicating with teachers, or attending parent-teacher conferences, or even checking their child’s grades, but it does mean that students should be allowed freedom and trust to handle their own education and make their own choices. After all, that is how they learn responsibility and become young adults.

As always, remember to be kind to yourselves and focus on becoming the best version of yourself in all aspects of your life, beyond just school.
