Adjusting to Change

Change is something that is constantly in motion and working alongside it can make our lives that much easier. For many of us, adjusting to change takes time and can be a balancing act. Today we want to talk about some ways to make this easier and why it's important.

Embrace How You Feel

Our feelings are an important thing to keep in mind when it comes to change because they're a part of who we are. They reflect our thoughts in any given situation and learning to view them as our allies can make all the difference. Change can bring with it stress since it's something that we usually aren't prepared for. While stress usually has a negative connotation to it, eustress on the other hand is considered good stress. Our perspective can have a large effect on how we view this type of change and something that would normally make us anxious such as a pop quiz, can be viewed as an opportunity to improve. It's good to be mindful about how we feel since our emotions can empower us when we take care of ourselves.

Focus on What's in Your Control

A common thing that can stress us out when it comes to change is putting too much attention on things outside of our control. This is what's known as an external locus of control and oftentimes these are things such as traffic or the weather. Similar to our feelings a perspective shift can help us here as well. Rather than viewing traffic as something bad, we can see it as a means of slowing down before our day. If the weather is gloomy, we can do other activities that don't require perfect weather such as a creative outlet indoors. Our internal locus of control focuses on the things we can tangibly affect such as our reactions and the things we do. Putting our attention on this can make adapting to change that much easier because we can feel empowered by making our own choices.

Give Yourself Space

One of the last major aspects when it comes to adjusting to change is learning to give yourself space. Many of us have a lot of things we want to accomplish and while ambition is good, there's a bit of an adjustment period when it comes to this. Doing too many new things can leave us feeling burnt out which can take away the enjoyment that goes along with new experiences. Gradually integrating these things is much better because it helps us get a better understanding of all the subtle aspects of a new activity. Change can happen at any point and it's good to be aware of this. While having a routine is good, being ready for things to be shaken up every now and then can mentally prepare you for when it does happen. Change is all about perspective and learning to try out new things can give you an overall better outlook on life.
