Communication as a Student

Communication is a key element that is used in school and as a student, there are many ways to work on this. While it may take time to hone these skills, it is something that can ultimately make a positive difference in your life. Today we want to discuss the importance of communication.

It Gives You a Foundation

When it comes to our interaction with others, there are many ways we can do this. From writing to non-verbal cues to talking, all of these are considered forms of communication. With so many different means of conveying our thoughts and emotions, this is crucial as it sets the tone and foundation for how we get along with others. Tone is the inflection of how we speak and it can help others know whether we are trying to be lighthearted or serious in a conversation. It is usually conveyed along with other things such as pitch or volume which both affect the subtle aspects of our speech. Talking to others is essential as we need to have a firm grasp on verbal communication given how common it is in a classroom environment.

Written And Oral Communication

Both written and oral communication will be the two most common areas to work on as a student. Presentations are one activity that students will partake in. Typically these involve discussing a topic that one student will talk about to the class as a means of explaining it. Persuasiveness is one thing that can help with this as some things such as debate club may involve trying to highlight things for others. Working on things such as enunciation or hand gestures is another means of providing engagement with this communication style. How you say something matters just as much as the content of what you say as listener engagement is key. For written communication, cohesiveness along with word choice are among the two best things to focus on. Being able to articulate your thoughts in a concise manner is good as it focuses on the most important elements.

Communication Outside of Class

Communication requires a good amount of self-introspection along with the awareness to know what techniques do and don't work. Going back to the persuasiveness topic, if we feel that the way we are conveying it isn't effective, we can reflect on this. If we find ourselves giving people answers rather than providing them the tools to reach a conclusion that makes sense to them, it can weaken our talking points. This is effectively seen in people in guidance positions as they understand that helping someone find the path that is right for them is better than telling them the path to follow, whether that be academically or in life. Communication is something that needs to be mutual between each party involved as it can help with interpersonal relationships as well. Giving someone the time of day to listen or to tell them how you feel can help convey honesty in a healthy way. Communication can make a positive difference in many people's lives and working on it can help immensely.
