Understanding Meditation

One way to describe meditation is that it is the technique of practicing awareness and clearing the mind through the use of breathing and concentration. When done properly, it can help you reach an emotionally calm state of mind. Dating back to as early as 5000 BCE, meditation has been around for many purposes both practical and cultural. There are multiple types of meditations out there such as mindfulness meditations or chakra meditations. Mindfulness meditations are typically focused on a particular theme or object along with being aware of how your body reacts to it. Chakra meditations on the other hand revolve around the bodies 7 different chakra points to help clear any energy blockages along with proper health. These are just some of the many different forms of meditation available. Given the wide variety, there is a meditation out there for everyone.

Why it Matters

Today meditation is used as a form of self-introspection along with other elements. One of the biggest reasons that students can benefit from this is that it functions as a healthy outlet for emotions. Sometimes we may be faced with a situation where we may not have as much choice as we want. While it may be easy to let this upset us and interfere with how we function, meditation is a great means of handling this. Proper meditation can help us shift our perspective on both our immediate surroundings along with the world around us. When we feel like things may be too much, we need to take some time out of our day to sit back and think about things. Meditation can help us de-stress and allow us to be one with our thoughts. This matters because our mind can affect how we perform both academically and as an individual.

How to Get Into Meditation

A great part about meditation is that it is accessible in many different forms. Traditional meditation can be done by having a nice quiet space to sit down and relax while being mindful of your breathing. Other forms of meditation such as guided meditation can be done through the use of helpful tools such as the Alaia application. Guided meditation usually has a narrator that reads off the exercise itself in an easy to follow manner. These are good for those looking to try out meditation but need a helping hand to do so. There is also group meditation. This is usually offered in some form of club or even in a physical health class. This can be good if you need another person there to help ease your nerves. All of these methods offer different ways of decompressing and can help out students who need a new form of mental clarity.
