Listening to Yourself

Being mindful of the needs of others is extremely important in our social world. Sometimes though the scales may tip in favor of ignoring our own needs or feelings. Recognizing this is important since we ultimately need to make sure we're okay before we can help others. Today we want to talk about why listening to yourself matters.

Trust Your Intuition

Intuition is often one of the best ways that we can work on listening to ourselves since it's important to trust it. This can be defined as “the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.” Some things in life are best understood through this method since we may have a tendency to overthink things. When we are calm and in a good frame of mind we can trust our intuition more since it works in harmony with how we think and feel a situation should be handled. Listening to yourself in this manner demonstrates that you're willing to accept your best judgment for a situation. It can help you be mindful of the kinds of people in your life along with behaviors you're willing to accept. Your intuition is effectively a means to keep you safe along with being able to value your own feelings.

Practice Kindness

Kindness is another area that we can use to listen to ourselves. Being kind to ourselves is essential since it is a form of self-love and care. Learning how to change our self-talk to be positive can be a process. Thankfully there are ways to help with this. Recognizing when we are participating in negative self-talk is one such way to do so since it can be easy to fall into these habits. Meditation is another way that we can use to help with thins since we can practice a loving-kindness meditation. Having this type of quiet activity where we can retreat inwards to understand our thoughts can give us the means to listen to how we feel. Everybody deserves some form of kindness and the best way to do this is by starting with ourselves.

Listen to Your Feelings

Our feelings are the last element we need to consider when it comes to listening to ourselves. Knowing how we feel in a situation can clue us into actionable steps to take to make us feel better. For instance, if we find ourselves feeling frustrated at someone's actions, rather than acting immediately we can slow down our thoughts and see why we're upset. Chances are that the other person might not have even known what they've done. We can also use this to examine whether our feelings are justified in a situation or if we're interpreting things negatively. Each of these methods can help us in different ways and allow us the space to be able to listen to ourselves. Learning how to listen to your own feelings and thoughts can take time and effort but it's something that's ultimately worth doing since it gives you more control over yourself.
