Social Psychology

As one of the many branches within this field, social psychology dares to challenge how we view our interactions with others in a constructive manner. With many different ideas surrounding this, we want to talk about how and why social psychology can help you in your daily life.

How we Behave

It goes without saying that how we behave and act depends on a variety of factors. This can be attributed to things such as how we view ourselves along with a combination of our thoughts and experiences. In the case of social psychology, behavior can be affected by our interactions with the group or company that we are in. When we think about either a group or relationship we are in, we need to consider that there is usually some form of underlying goal within this. It can be simply to understand one another or to find a place of acceptance. These both play a role in our behavior and can affect us in subconscious ways. For example, if you are in a group where everyone involved needs to finish an assignment, your behavior will effectively be more team-driven than other groups. This is different in other areas where an individual may act more on their individual needs depending on whether a relationship with a group is less close. Being aware of how this works is good as it can keep you mindful of what you subconsciously are thinking about.

Where Does The Self Come Into Play?

The self is much more important in social psychology than we give it credit for. One concept that ties into this is the idea of our ego which is someone's sense of self-esteem or importance. In social psychology, there is an inherent give and take that needs to be considered with the ego. On the one hand, we want to be mindful of others which is a good thing. On the other hand, we need to consider how much of our own sense of self is being compromised when it comes to this. While there is no definitive answer since every situation is different, taking a moment to think and practice awareness is one of the best ways to help with this. Everyone is different and this holds true with how we interact with people. Focusing on good qualities while practicing both patience with ourselves and others is a great means of doing so.

Cause And Effect

Lastly we want to consider the idea of cause and effect. This has a large impact in this topic because it directly affects those that you are in contact with. In every interaction we need to consider how someone acts under normal circumstances along with how someone acts in each situation. There are as many unique situations as there are people in this world and understanding how people react to this is good. We can use this knowledge to practice kindness if someone is facing adversity along with helping them find a solution that works best for them. Communication is at the forefront of social psychology and fostering these skills early can make a difference.
