Learning at Your Own Pace

Learning is an activity that is unique to each of us. Some of us may prefer a different style entirely whereas others may have a certain pace they prefer. Today we want to talk about the importance of learning at your own pace.

It Helps You Manage Your Time

Your time is valuable and this holds true for any activity you do. Learning requires a large time investment both inside and outside of the classroom. Managing this time is much easier during your free time and this is evident by how we choose to study. We can choose to focus our attention on activities that work better for us such as using flashcards or by reading about our material. Using our time in a constructive manner is both necessary and practical. When we learn at our own pace we integrate breaks that work for us rather than for someone else. Effective time management carries over into learning for higher education as well where the assignments take more time. More difficult assignments require different levels of focus along with rest in between and learning this early can help prepare you for the future.

It Lets You Adjust to Different Learning Styles

Each of us has a preference for the type of learner we are. Kinesthetic learners may feel less engaged with auditory learning compared to physical activities. This is important to recognize as we need to adjust to different styles on a daily basis. If it's an entirely new activity we do need to take more time to understand it. A great example of this is true when learning a new sport. Kinesthetic learners may be able to pick up on what is needed faster by practicing it repeatedly whereas visual learners may need to see what others do and watch guides to see proper technique. Both of these are appropriate for the type of person performing a task and it can lead to a better result if done properly. Adapting to different styles can be useful and by properly taking our time we can do that easier.

Learning is a Personal Activity

It's good to remember that learning is inherently a personal activity and it should be treated as such. When we go into learning with this mindset we can give ourselves the space to grow. This is needed as it isn't healthy to measure how fast you learn by comparing yourself to others. Our own personal growth needs to be at our own pace because if we try to rush that then it can cause issues with processing information. Some benefits of this is that by viewing it as a personal activity we can focus on other elements such as being responsible for how it turns out. When we feel that we have an active say in our learning it can empower us to make better choices. Learning can be fun and there is a give and take regarding it. Giving yourself the time to grow can lead to results that can last a lifetime.
