How to Work on Discipline

Discipline is an extremely helpful quality to work on since it can help us finish challenging tasks. There are many different ways to improve our self-discipline which is why today we want to cover some of these methods along with talking about why it's important.

Practice Self-Awareness

A great first step to work on when it comes to discipline is to practice self-awareness. Two areas that we want to build the most amount of awareness for are our strengths and our weaknesses. These are both crucial to understand since they both affect what we are able to do. A good example of this can be seen with physical exercise and knowing how much we can realistically do in one workout session. Your limits are important because they set boundaries not just for your time, but also for your health. Being mindful of this can give you the space you need to focus on improvement along with building discipline along the way. Your weaknesses can highlight different things to work on while your strengths can give you the courage needed to persevere.

Focus on Action

Discipline requires a healthy balance between our thoughts along with action and being able to channel this into a routine is one way to build it. Action allows us to work on the process without being stuck in our thoughts. In order to truly work on discipline, we need to do something consistently so we can integrate it into our lives. One example of this would be a creative outlet that you want to work on. In order to truly see the results of your labor, you need to put in the time to get better. There are a lot of subtle nuances when it comes to learning something and many people opt to quit as soon as things get difficult. Discipline makes it harder to do that since it’s a reminder that you have a goal you want to focus on. Channeling into this combination of both willpower and motivation is necessary at times because when you truly want something, you'll have to put in the effort for it. Action is a powerful way to signify that you truly care about something and all it takes is the discipline to work towards it.

Give Yourself Time to Adjust

While having a desire to improve and cultivate discipline is a good thing, it's equally as important to give yourself time to adjust. Discipline is a great example of process-oriented thinking since it requires us to do something repeatedly. One key thing to keep in mind about discipline is that it is meant to help you push past the less desirable parts of something because it's ultimately going to help you in the future. This can be seen with projects you'll work on along with other areas in your life. Learning to slow down your thoughts and fully immerse yourself in the process itself is a great way to foster gratitude for these new activities.
