Loving What You Do

Finding an appreciation for the things that you do can give you a newfound sense of gratitude. As students there are many different activities we will find ourselves doing and learning to love what we do can offer us a great way to improve our happiness. Today we want to discuss why this matters along with some ways to do that.

View School as an Investment

Your experiences in school can be life-changing in addition to being enjoyable. One great mindset shift is to view school as an investment for your future. While the busywork of assignments can feel a bit less than desirable at times, reframing how we see this can make it that much more enjoyable. A great example of this is our homework. Homework gives us the chance to explore new avenues within a subject and can help us discover concepts that we may find engaging. Take a concept in psychology such as our locus of control. A student may discover that the techniques learned from this have a real-world application and can be used to promote self-efficiency. School makes learning about these things that much easier and gives you a positive environment to do that.

Loving The Process

Part of being able to love what you do involves adopting a different mindset. One way we can do this is to focus on being more process-oriented. A process-oriented approach relies upon us finding enjoyment in doing the work rather than looking at the end goal of something. This ties into something known as intrinsic motivation. This type of motivation is related to us finding purpose and meaning from within rather than relying on something external to make us happy. One way this can apply as a student is finding value in an exercise. Instead of simply viewing exercise as a means to lose weight, look at it in a manner that lets you have fun with what you do. A simple game of soccer can lead to a good experience with friends along with improving at it and feeling more confident with your skills.

Pursuing Your Passions

One of the last and best ways to love what you do is to pursue your passions. This can be done at any point and we can see this with our hobbies. A hobby is something that we do voluntarily during our free time and it can give us the means to decompress and learn about new things. One example of a hobby is painting or the arts in general. These can give us the creative liberties to express ourselves in a space free of judgment. Having this sort of freedom is good because it can improve your overall happiness along with giving you the tools to be yourself. Loving what you do involves being able to adapt to new mindset shifts along with putting things into action. It's about finding the harmonious nature of doing what you love in a way that works for you.
