Why Downtime is Important

Rest and relaxation are things that can often go by the wayside in our busy lives. This usually happens when we have a lot of things to do or want to accomplish. Ambition is a great thing to strive towards and while it's encouraged, like anything else in life it requires a healthy balance. Today we want to talk about why downtime specifically is so important along with some positive mindset shifts to help us recognize this.

It Helps You Get Your Best Work Done

Being able to provide your best possible work is essential as a student. Many of the assignments we do require us to give it our all in order to maintain a good grade point average. This is crucial to remember since good grades provide us with more opportunities within the academic field along with our future careers. With that in mind, we need to be aware of how all of this plays into our health. Sometimes putting in a lot of effort into things can take a toll on us mentally which we need to be aware of. Things such as staying up late to do these things might sound good on paper since we're still getting things done, but it often results in lower quality work. Instead, we need to shift the balance towards time management and giving ourselves enough space to rest since it can provide us with better mental clarity.

It Provides a Healthy Outlet to Express Yourself

Downtime is one of the best ways to give yourself a healthy outlet for expression. Creativity is something that is able to flourish when we have the mental energy and space needed to be authentic. A great example of this is looking back to when you worked on a creative project. Chances are that it was something that you wanted to do of your own accord and you were intrinsically motivated to do it. This can be something along the lines of writing a short story or drawing something you're passionate about. The key thing to keep in mind is that we're only able to do these things when we have the time and are in the right headspace to do so. Downtime allows us to be ourselves and learn more about the things we love.

It Brings About Positive Change

By far one one the best things that downtime allows for is that it can bring about positive change. Having an environment that empowers you is a great example of this. A good environment can be a quiet space to be with your thoughts or even just a comfy place to rest your head. Personalizing your space is one such way to do this since it makes it feel more like your own. Positive change can be found in many ways and even something as small as redecorating things can make you feel happier. Learning how to use your downtime in ways that can improve the quality of your life can make a tangible difference along with empowering you.
