3 Ways Students Can Manage Stress

Stress is a common feeling that we experience when we feel things are out of our control. Most people don’t know how to manage this unwanted emotion. Often, we just accept stress as a normal part of everyday life, when actually this can be managed and prevented. Here are three things you can do to start handling your stress.

Take Care of Your Body

How you feel has a lot to do with what you put into your body. Harmful substances such as caffeine, refined sugars, are all things that can increase stress rather than reduce it. A nutritious diet will alleviate stress and help with your overall health and mood. Rather than drinking loads of coffee, try substituting this for water, herbal tea, or diluted natural fruit juices. Reducing your intake of refined sugars, such as those found in dressings and bread, will leave you in a positive mood and feeling energized.

Keep a Stress Diary

Recording when and why you feel stressed might also be a good way to understand and handle these feelings. Consider keeping a stress diary for a few weeks, where you record the date, time, and place you experienced a stressful moment. Note who you were with, what you were doing at the time, and how stressed you felt on a scale from 1-10. This will help you understand what affects you, what places or people to avoid, and how to tackle this stress. Once you understand what you are feeling, and why you are feeling it, then you can start working through it.

Rest When You Need To

Last but not least, learn to listen to your body and take care of yourself. If you are feeling drained and exhausted, rest. Start the habit of paying attention to what your body is asking for. If you are feeling drained and need sleep, then making time for more rest can make a difference. You can also try out different relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation. These types of activities help you slow down and take a minute for yourself. When you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed, take a second to relax. You should always be your number one priority, so be kind to yourself and pay attention to what it is you need.
