How to Not Let Things Get to You

Life can present different challenges that we have to face throughout our journey. Some are focused on the specific problems we experience and others can be related to the type of mindset we have. Today we want to take some time to talk about how to not let things get to you and some constructive ways to help with that.

Recognize What's in Your Control

A simple yet effective way to not let things get to you is by recognizing what's in your control. There are two specific types of control known as the internal and external locus of control. The external locus focuses on things that we don't have direct influence over such as the weather or how someone else goes about their day. These things are often not worth spending the mental energy thinking about since we ultimately would have to work around them as a sort of reaction. The internal locus of control on the other hand involves what we're capable of directly influencing through our actions. This is much better to think about since we can use it in a manner that can empower us.

Reflect on The Situation

Another helpful thing to keep in mind is that some things simply aren't worth your time or energy. This is a multifaceted method since there are a few ways we can work towards this. For one, not every battle is worth fighting and that can include things such as arguments or conflicts that don't necessarily involve us. While being proactive in your life is a good thing, being able to let go and practice non-attachment at times is also important. Our time and energy are valuable since they both affect our ability to work on the things we need to do. A good example of this is our assignments for school. Rather than getting involved in something such as a conflict among our peers, we can opt to realign our values to focus on the things that are important to us.

Practice Self-Care

Self-care is ultimately our goal in regards to not letting things get to us. Having a good sense of balance along with awareness is a crucial part in improving our lives. This also plays a role with our mental health since being able to let things go is a part of that. It's completely okay to feel the way you do since your emotions are valid. Dwelling on things at some point does become counterproductive since it doesn't allow us to move past these feelings. Being able to distinguish when you reach this point is a good skill since it can keep you moving forward instead of feeling stuck. Having people you can talk to about things along with a good social network is another core area of this since the act of expression can make a difference. Being able to regain your energy by letting go of things that get to you can give you the courage to enact positive change within your life.
