Using Positive Communication

There are many different ways to use communication but one of the most effective is being able to use it in a positive manner. Through a combination of mindset shifts, communication can be made easier to use efficiently. Today we want to explore this idea and figure out how to implement this.

Enter With an Open Mind

An effective way to work on positive communication is to enter into something with an open mind. This is good because when we are receptive we can focus on the message itself rather than how it is being said. In many cases, we will need to be mindful of someone’s background when considering their point. This is one of many factors that can affect how well something like a conversation will go. A good communicator recognizes that both sides want to be heard and giving someone else the proper time and attention can help with that. Instead of looking for ways to be right, consider that the other side has knowledge that you don't about something. This type of flexible mindset allows you to learn from others while also enjoying their presence as well.

Promote Respect

Mutual respect is essential when it comes to positive communication as you want others to know that you are on the same side. In collaborative environments, it's important to emphasize that you are both working toward a similar goal. This simple reminder can promote humility and help everyone involved be on the same page. In an environment where there is a disagreement, it is possible to share how you feel while still being respectful. For example, if there is a teammate who disagrees with how something can be done, a good way to handle it would be asking what their thoughts are on how to improve something. This is good because it addresses the concern they have along with giving them the space to show how their way of thinking can make a difference. Respect is crucial because it establishes that you care about someone on a fundamental level.

Demonstrate Empathy

One of the last major aspects of positive communication involves being able to demonstrate empathy. Empathy is one of the most helpful life skills because it lets you put yourself in someone else's shoes. One way we can do this is by starting with active listening. This form of listening places the attention on someone else instead of our response. Doing this allows us to cohesively follow what someone else is trying to convey while also giving us the time to see how it makes them feel. Positive communication requires us to put in the effort to understand others as it can make for a more genuine connection when expressing ourselves. Being able to promote honesty is essential as good communication is built upon trust. These are some of the many ways of bringing positive qualities when it comes to communicating with others. While it takes effort, it is something that can ultimately benefit you and those around you.
