Prioritizing Mental Health

Our mental health determines our success in school, work, and other areas of our lives. Being able to take care of this can feel challenging at times since there are many responsibilities we need to balance. We ultimately need to work on re-framing how we take care of ourselves since mental health matters. Today we want to talk about the importance of prioritizing our mental health.

Make Space to Rest

Our minds need time to rest from all the things we need to do. After a busy day of work or school, the first thing we probably want to do is decompress and forget about the day. Leisure activities can help us destress from things that might be weighing us down. Sleep allows us to recharge and reevaluate where we stand on certain goals. Sometimes things that we want to do can take a long time to accomplish such as higher education. With that in mind, setting aside time to slow down our thoughts and meditate can help us stay calm. When we're in a relaxed state of mind, it's much easier to do the things we need. We can look at everything from a much healthier perspective along with being more optimistic. Rest is important since we need it to be productive along with maintaining our mental well-being.

Do Things That Empower You

Feeling empowered and in control of your life is an important part of positive mental health. Oftentimes when we feel things are difficult, it's because we might not be in control. It's good to recognize what we have agency in since these are the places we want to be more mindful of. Things such as the weather or traffic are beyond what we have influence over so it's not worth spending mental energy stressing over them. What we can do is find ways to empower ourselves in our day-to-day life. Doing things that make us happy such as working on something creative or playing our favorite sport can help our minds and bodies feel better.

Know When You Need a Change

Change can be both helpful and challenging at the same time. Depending on how we feel, we might think that a change can be difficult since we're so used to how things currently are. Sometimes though, we need to know when we need a change. Working towards positive change can give us the courage to move our life in a better direction. If we feel stuck in a certain part of our life it can be a wake-up call for trying to work it out in a more productive manner. Self-awareness is an important quality to foster since it can teach us how to value our thoughts more. Good mental health requires us to take the steps needed to help ourselves when we really need it. Something as small as reaching out to someone and asking for the tools and resources allows us to build the courage towards taking care of ourselves.
