Overcoming Mental Roadblocks

At some point in our lives, we'll find ourselves in a situation where we might feel stuck. It can be because of our thought processes, past experiences, or simply feeling unhappy. It's okay to feel this way and we shouldn't expect ourselves to be perfect. Today we want to take a look at some ways we can overcome these mental roadblocks so we can start working towards happiness.

Being Okay With Our Thoughts

Sadness and anger are extremely powerful emotions and we may have thoughts that reflect these feelings. Learning to be okay with our thoughts is necessary if we want to move past any mental roadblocks we might face. There's nothing wrong with feeling sad or angry. These are normal emotions and they're important because they can let us know how we truly feel about something. Acceptance is an important aspect of this since we're allowed to be vulnerable. It's part of what makes us human. Allowing ourselves to not feel like we have to be happy all the time is vital for our well-being since we need to be okay with all of our emotions.

The Past Can't Hurt Us

While the past can serve as a great teacher, we can't always let it dictate how we live our lives. Yes, sometimes we'll experience pain and while it does hurt in the moment, the past itself can't hurt us. This is so important because the key thing that's worth putting our time and attention into is living in the present. The here and now is incredibly valuable since it's what we're currently experiencing. When we're too focused on the past we run the risk of ignoring all the wonderful things we have going on in our lives. When we find ourselves feeling like we're worried about how the past is affecting us, it's worth taking the time to stop and breathe. Breathing allows us to shift our attention away from our thoughts and lets us focus on our bodies’ reactions instead.

“While the past can serve as a great teacher, we can't always let it dictate how we live our lives.”

Allow Yourself Time And Space to Heal

A mental roadblock can be the result of many different things. By far one of the best things we can do is give ourselves the time and space to heal. Realizing that we have the power to take things at our own pace can make a huge difference in our lives. We have a lot more agency than we realize and just because we're at a roadblock doesn't mean it's impossible. When we're able to step back we can find new solutions to our problems and calmly express our thoughts and feelings. A vacation for example can help us decompress. Writing in a journal can serve as a timeline for where we were and how we felt at each point in our lives. Having a creative outlet can help us express ourselves in a healthy manner. Everyone heals differently and being patient with ourselves can make the process that much easier.
