How to Use Metacognition

Metacognition can give us the means to be more efficient in our daily lives while also being able to teach us more about ourselves. With many different ways to use it, we want to talk about some of these methods and how they can improve the quality of your life.

Write Down Your Thoughts

Our thoughts are the cornerstone for metacognition and being able to review them is extremely important. One of the best ways to do this is by writing them down. The process of thinking about thinking is much easier when we can tangibly visualize what they are when on paper. This can be something along the lines of using it as a means of organizing what we feel along with any of our responsibilities. A good way we can use this constructively is by breaking down any mental barriers that may prevent us from doing things. For example, we may have a thought about our performance in a public setting and then choose to write it down. We can then meditate on it and ask ourselves whether or not we feel confident about it. If we aren't confident we can go further and ask ourselves why. This can give us the means to get closer to the root of our thoughts and help us be more proactive.

Practice Active Listening

Active listening is another great means of using metacognition within your life. In conversation, many of us are usually focused on what it is that we want to say. Flipping the script in this scenario and putting your attention on the other person is good for a multitude of reasons. For one, it helps us accurately pay attention to what it is the other side is trying to convey. This process is known as active listening where we are fully present and aware of the speaker. It gives us the ability to visualize what the message is along with paying attention to non-verbal cues as well. Active listening is essential for good communication since it helps us empathize more with what people are saying. Being mindful of this can help us reframe our thoughts in a manner that lets us think about what we're listening to.

Make Space For Awareness

The last effective method that we can use as far as metacognition goes is by making space for awareness. Meditation is a great way to do this since it gives us a quiet place to be at peace with our thoughts. We can think about this in great detail since we don't have to worry about how to express these feelings. Giving ourselves proper time to be able to reflect on our thoughts can be restorative and relaxing. It can help us make peace with any situation we may be going through along with giving us the composure to make better decisions. Metacognition and the act of reviewing our thoughts hold a lot of value. The ability to look back at how we thought about something while actively trying to take more positive steps can make a positive difference.
