How to be a Better Decision-Maker

Decisions are a key part of our lives and learning how to be more efficient with them can help. Sometimes they can be difficult to make but thankfully there are many ways to help with that. Today we want to talk about some ways we can be better decision-makers and why it's important.

Do Your Research

Research is one of the best methods when it comes to decision-making. While it's tempting to want to make a choice with the information you currently have, there are many benefits to waiting and making an educated decision. A good example of this can be writing a paper based on your prior knowledge on a subject versus spending extra time to look into it. The latter is much better because it can give you more specific knowledge about your topic of choice which ca give you an advantage. We can also use this in our day-to-day lives when it comes to other things as well. Looking into a review for a product for example lets us get more insight as to whether it will suit our needs or if it was well-made. The extra amount of time we spend trying to educate ourselves can help alleviate the potential stress we may face when making a decision.

Ask For Help

Sometimes we may not have all the answers even with research which is why it's good to ask for help. Others may be more knowledgeable about topics and have real-world experiences regarding events that may be going on. Something as simple as asking a counselor for what classes they recommend can be good because it gives you more insight as to what's available. Other people can give you a better idea of what you can do in a situation by providing you with resources that you may otherwise not have. They can also act as a sort of guide. A peer for example may know specifically what you're going through decision-wise and can opt to give you direction with how to handle things.

Consider Multiple Perspectives

The last thing that can help us out immensely when it comes to decision making is to consider multiple perspectives. Similar to asking for help, seeing things from a different angle is crucial because it lets us see more possible solutions. One example of this is trying to view something from the lens of a newcomer. Sometimes we may find ourselves in a position where we're trying to help someone else make their own decisions. While our expertise is good, remembering how we saw it when we were new at it is helpful since it lets us be more empathetic towards the same kind of thought process. Everyone starts from somewhere and being able to consider more perspectives than our own can give us the necessary information needed to be a better decision maker. Ultimately we do the best we can with the time and resources available and being patient with ourselves can also help.
