Using Metacognition Effectively

Metacognition, otherwise known as thinking about our thoughts, has a wide variety of applications. From being more efficient to simply making the most out of our lives, this concept can help us in constructive ways. Today we want to talk about how to apply this and why it is useful.

Metacognition With Activities

Implementing metacognition with the activities we do can be extremely useful. There are many instances where we will find ourselves doing things that we may subconsciously not be interested in. There are many things that we may not always want to do but have to do and that is okay. Reviewing how we see these is good as it can help us see the value in what we have to do. Thinking about something as chores can give us a sense of routine which can get us through longer activities. Even for something that is optional metacognition can give us new insight into why we do things. A good example of this is doing a group activity only because your peers are doing it. It's good to recognize whether this is something you would do normally or only with others. Sometimes these things can be fun although being mindful of your time is something that also matters.

Metacognition With Relationships

Relationships are another important aspect to consider when it comes to metacognition. While not everything requires us to think extremely deeply about it, being self-aware with our bonds with others is helpful. Sometimes we may be friends with someone who may either be a bad influence or may disempower us. Thinking about this is good as it can help us re-evaluate whether it is a relationship to work on or to potentially review. Some relationships last longer than others and that is okay. Feeling that you have a good support network along with people you can count on is essential for our well-being. Everybody wants and deserves a feeling of belonging and our relationships are one of the best ways to help foster this.

Metacognition With Goals

Goals are something that are extremely personal and metacognition can give us another means of being able to rethink these. Determining how you want to work on your goals is one such way that we can incorporate metacognition. Finding the right balance between being process oriented and being goal oriented is one such way that we can do this. Process oriented thinking relies upon us being mindful of the things we do in the moment along with the individual aspects that comprise things. Goal oriented thinking lets us what we specifically want to accomplish while setting up markers along the way. Both of these are essential as they help us see different parts of the cohesive whole. Thinking about how we see our goals allows us to find better ways to accomplish them along with incorporating gratitude for the process itself. Metacognition is an incredibly useful mindset shift as it can give us new ways to process old information and it can ultimately increase the quality of our lives.
