3 Ways to Take Care of Yourself When Sick

Our health is precious which is why we need to put in extra effort to take care of ourselves when we are sick. It can affect our performance along with overall life satisfaction. Today we want to discuss 3 helpful methods to help us practice self-care during these times.

Stay Hydrated

One of the easiest and most universal ways to help yourself when sick is to stay hydrated. Our bodies may naturally find themselves dehydrated when we are sick which is why we need to make sure that we are mindful of that. Water allows our bodies to recharge and get the fluids we need while also acting as a means to purify our system. Electrolytes are also essential as they help us hydrate better and give us more energy to work with. Water specifically is great given that it doesn't have any sugar in it which leads to overall stable mood levels. Warm drinks are also good as they can help soothe our throat and calm us down. A warm lavender tea with honey for example does exactly that while also giving us a mood-lifting benefit. Being conscious of what we drink while we are sick is good as it lets us cut out any junk food while giving us the means to drink things better for us.

Get a Good Nights Sleep

Rest is an essential part of recovery and this is best seen in regards to sleeping. A good night’s sleep gives us the proper time to recharge our bodies for the tasks ahead. When we are sick we need to take extra time to focus on this form of rest as we will need more energy for even simple tasks. A good way to start integrating this is to go to bed earlier while removing distractions. Things such as our computer or our phones have blue light which makes it much harder to sleep. We can also take time to focus on relaxing before bed which will let us be in a better mindset for resting. Taking naps throughout the day can also be a good means of resting our minds as it can give us a smaller amount of energy to work with.

Take Time to Relax

When we are sick we need to take time to relax and focus on positive thoughts. Too often do we think about things outside of our own locus of control that contribute to our sickness which is why we need to reframe these thoughts when sick. Instead of thinking about something that upset you, use that same amount of time and energy to review the things in your life that you are grateful for. It can be a friend who is always thoughtful of your needs, a family member who always has your back when the time calls for it or even something you're passionate about. Positive thoughts can help speed up the healing process and remind you that even while sick, there are still things to be grateful for.
