Reading For Leisure

Usually learned at a young age, reading is something that many students are familiar with. It's valuable because of its ability to let us communicate with one another in a unique manner. It can make the act of talking in some ways easier because of its convenience and ease of access. It also allows us to understand complex concepts and lets us review them at a pace that works for us. While reading is useful being able to read for leisure is important for multiple reasons. Today we want to take a look at what can feel like a forgotten art in our fast-paced era.

Reading As A Skill

Reading is an essential skill in life because it allows us to understand the written word in more ways than one. Being able to read allows us to infer subtext and meaning behind words along with the literal interpretation of them. This is helpful both when reading fiction and nonfiction since it can allow us to see what someone is really trying to convey. This can in turn make it so we're more cognizant of those around us so we can be informed when making decisions. When we read for enjoyment it's a lot easier to see this sort of subtext since our mind will naturally be trying to find the answers. A detective novel for example can help us think critically to see the motives behind each character and see who's telling the truth. The great thing about this is that the only stakes are the ones within fiction and it serves as a fun exercise to get our brain thinking while also enjoying the plot. Having fun while improving a skill is a true win-win.

It Provides Empathy

When we read for leisure we're consistently putting ourselves in the shoes of many different protagonists. Some are similar to us and others come from very different backgrounds. Having this type of diversity among characters is great since it can provide a multitude of unique perspectives. These perspectives can help foster a sense of empathy by allowing us to get a glimpse into how someone else views the world. Oftentimes the situation we're in for our own lives is a lot better than we might think. The benefit to reading for fun is that it can show us some alternative viewpoints from people who may have it differently than ourselves. Using this as a means to learn and promote both gratitude and empathy can make us more well-rounded individuals.

Reading Is Meant To Be Enjoyed

Breaking the stigma of reading things out of obligation can feel hard at times. Having an open mind can make us much more receptive to reading both optional and required reading. Reading allows us to transport ourselves to different worlds and gives us more insight as to what the author wants us to understand for their work. Reading can be an outlet to help us discover more about our interests along with learning about the world itself. Enjoying reading is synonymous with enjoying life itself since after all, art imitates life.
