Why Intrapersonal Learning Is Effective

It's good to think about how we handle learning things on our own. After all one of the main goals of our education is so that we're able to become sufficient lifelong learners outside of the classroom. Intrapersonal learning is good to work on given that it ensures that we'll be able to take care of ourselves and embrace our personal freedom. Let's dive into why this style is so effective.

Self-Reflection

It takes a lot of courage to reflect on who we are along with our experiences. It's crucial that we do this since it allows us the opportunity to see why we feel the way we do along with what we can do to improve things. Learning about ourselves is one of the many things we do throughout our lives. It can give us insight into what we value along with how we carry ourselves and our actions. It allows us to learn more about our perspective and how we view the world. Oftentimes our environment is a direct result of why that is and other times it’s because of who we inherently are. Recognizing that we're able to change these thought patterns is part of the goal of intrapersonal learning along with metacognition as well. Understanding who we are better allows us to make sense of our experiences and make healthier decisions.

Fostering Independence

Being independent allows us to be self-sufficient so that we can take care of ourselves with ease and grace. It's necessary since it prepares us for many of the challenges we'll face and helps us use our minds to creatively problem-solve. Sometimes the solution for things isn't always clear cut and there's a time and place when asking for help. Other times though we need to utilize the skills we've learned so that we can best handle things. A good moral compass and values are core to this since we can use them as a foundation for our actions. When we take the time to be by ourselves we're able to see things more clearly because we've made enough space to create new perspectives. School assignments are a great example of how students apply this type of learning largely because they rely on their note-taking and listening skills during class time. Not only this but homework also requires motivation and discipline to be able to follow through with it.

Building Emotional Intelligence

The idea of being by ourselves can vary immensely depending on who you ask and their perspective. Solitude can be incredibly peaceful and necessary given that it teaches us how to manage our emotions when we're alone. Stress management for example is something that intrapersonal learning can teach us because of the self-reflection that it requires. Finding ways to express yourself authentically while also being considerate of those around you is part of this. It can remind us of the value of thinking before speaking along with trying to slow down and see how we feel before acting.
