Priorities And How to Work on Them

As students, we have many responsibilities we need to manage. These can come in many forms such as academic responsibilities or work-related. Figuring out what our priorities are is an essential life skill. Today we want to discuss some practical ways to work on our priorities.

Start With One Thing at a Time

One common way that many people struggle to manage their priorities is that they tend to overwhelm themselves with too many things at once. Multitasking can be incredibly helpful when it comes to certain activities that are passive and take time to progress. Doing two active things at the same time can be difficult as we are splitting our mental energy into many places at once. A good way to ease this is to try and boil down your priorities to one thing at any given time. This will let you focus on a single task which will allow you to give all the attention it requires. A good example of this would be if you have a test to dedicate yourself completely to it mentally and not let other things distract you. If we need to still the mind, we can practice breathing or closing our eyes to give us a moment of clarity. Sometimes taking a brief break can help us focus on our priorities and help us perform better.

Plan Ahead

Planning can be a useful means of keeping track of our priorities as it can let us manage our time better. Scheduling is a helpful tool for priorities that need to be done in the future as it can help us make space for other things in the meantime. While we need to dedicate time to working on what is in front of us, giving a proper time and place to work on future priorities is good. Planning is good as it can allow for extra time to prepare for life events and meetings. Part of becoming self-sufficient involves allotting time for multiple things and this is a good first step. While not everything can be planned for, having a good framework for what to do can ease stress and give you time to enjoy life as well as accomplishing any priorities you may have.

Understand When to Take Time For Yourself

Our priorities are important but our own health is equally as important. Some things can't be put off such as an important assignment but that doesn't mean we'll be working on that for the entire day. When we have downtime we need to ensure that we have energy afterward to take on any assignments that may be due later during the week. Resting gives us time to heal and rethink how we want to solve any challenges. If we find ourselves having a tough time with homework, we can plan for scheduled breaks to refresh the mind. Working on our priorities can be enjoyable when we remember to take care of ourselves and we hope that this advice helps you on your academic journey!
