How To Be More Reliable

Reliability is a quality that is often desired in people since it means they're someone you can count on. This is especially important given that it can foster a sense of trust and professionalism. This trait is good to have both in school and work since there are many people including ourselves that we depend on to be there when it matters. Today we want to talk about how we can be more reliable and the benefits it provides.

Saying Yes Within Reason

Compromise is an essential part of our relationships. Certain things we have to do for the sake of making things work. While we do have a choice in many of the things we do, sometimes it's in our best interests to say yes within reason. There are a few reasons for this. When it comes to school or work, most of the time we'll need to follow the instructions of our teacher or manager. This is necessary given the position that we're in but that doesn't mean we're without agency. Some things simply aren't within our skill set and it's important to discuss this when possible so as not to bring about the wrong expectations. Other times it's simply unethical to do certain tasks which is when we need to say no. Being reliable doesn't mean we have to compromise our values, rather it teaches us to strike a balance between doing what's needed and being aware of our boundaries.

Being Present

A good sign of someone that's reliable is that they're able to be present. This applies not just physically but mentally as well. Showing up is half of the equation when it comes to school but the other half is being proactive and engaged with your courses. An easy way to help with this is to make sure that you're getting enough rest and focusing on proper nutrition. Exhaustion can be very debilitating and it's easily avoidable if we take care of our health. During class asking questions and taking notes are a great sign of engagement since it's much easier to retain information by doing so. Group projects are another form of this since we want to avoid distractions and discuss what steps to take with the others involved. Being present shows others that you care and are aware of those around you along with wanting to achieve the best possible outcome.

Focus On Consistency

If there's anyone we want to be reliable towards it's ourselves. Self-reliability is important since it teaches you how to stand up on your own without waiting for good things to happen. A great approach to this is by working on consistency. A workout routine is the best example of this since it allows us to set aside time out of our day to take care of our bodies. Understanding which things we want to spend time on is important as well. Some things are worth breaking our routine for while others might not be worth it. Consistency allows us to perform our best by taking care of ourselves which in turn allows us to be more reliable.
