Maintaining Positive Momentum

Something worth thinking about is how to sustain good habits over a long period of time. One way we can look at this is positive momentum where our current actions can be used to keep us going. Let's break down how we can maintain this sort of positive momentum so that things can be more fulfilling for us.

Check In With Yourself

Our mood and attitude towards our education play a big role in how we're doing. It's worth checking in with yourself consistently to see what needs to be changed. Recognizing whether or not we need help with an assignment is one such way that this awareness can pay off. Some things might be beyond our current capabilities but someone educated about these things can share that knowledge so that we can stand on our own. Another example of this is whether we're frustrated with certain aspects of our school life. If we feel that our peer group is making us feel worse, it's okay to take a break to refresh ourselves.

Review Your Goals

Every student has something they want to achieve throughout their academic journey. Some may want to have the highest GPA they can while others may want to dedicate more time towards extracurriculars. Each goal is different and needs to be treated as such. Some things might be easier to do or more ideal at a later point in time. Others may require certain resources to get started. It's healthy to review your goals since we want to make sure that they aren't just achievable, but that they also feel rewarding to do. Creating a reward system for long-term goals is one such way to help with this since it provides another incentive to do things. The idea is that we want to make sure that we're intrinsically and extrinsically motivated to have the right blend.

Balancing Social Commitments

School is made up of so many different elements and the social side of things matters as well. The friends we make provide a sense of community and comfort during hard times. Networking is also an essential life skill that can help us at many different stages. With all that in mind, these do take energy to maintain and we need to be aware of our well-being when planning things. Overcommitting to social events can leave us feeling drained which can affect us in other areas. Not spending enough time with others can make us feel isolated which is its own form of stress. Making an effort to do at least one social event a week is a small but helpful start to getting us out there and enjoying the people we value. Positive momentum takes time to build and requires us to be mindful of how we spend our time.
