What is Metacognition?

As a relatively recent concept within the psychological sphere, metacognition can be viewed as the act of thinking about thinking. While this may sound a bit confusing, the overall goal of it is to focus on awareness of our own thought processes and to see how it can be used in an effective manner. This involves a combination of understanding general psychology along with philosophy as both of these are intertwined. Effectively using psychology in this instance requires self-introspection and being aware of our own thought processes. Philosophy ties into this as it can stimulate our minds and help us find answers that may be beyond our own personal scope. The willingness to ask questions in the face of the unknown is an admirable and needed quality for metacognition. This type of thinking can be used in many aspects of life such as our relationships, personal growth, and even academic performance.

How to Incorporate Metacognition

Implementing metacognitive practices into your life doesn't have to be a difficult endeavor. A great way to start doing this is to take the time and do research about any specific questions you may have. This can involve asking peers or mentors who may have more experience about these practices or even finding a positive group to talk about. We can also seek out educational resources and journals to delve deep into questions that may involve more complex topics. Recognizing your own significance in the world is another way we can start incorporating metacognition. Asking yourself ways to make the most out of your life and what path you can take to empower yourself and be happy is crucial. We can take it a step further and ask how we can provide value to our local communities through a combination of our thoughts and actions.

Our Thoughts Have Weight Behind Them

Our mind can be one of our most powerful assets when applied properly. We are capable of immense amounts of understanding, both for ourselves and for others and metacognition recognizes that. Our thoughts have weight to them as they are the catalyst for our actions. This is a good thing, as they can enable us to do the right thing when it comes to personal choices for school. Finding ways to empower and motivate ourselves for our academic responsibilities is needed, as we want to be our best possible selves. Learning is a virtuous action, but we also need to consider “how” we learn. Training yourself to question why we think the way we do allows us to see which methods work for us and which ones we need to tweak. While this kind of shift takes time, it can lead to greater success academically and boost our happiness.
