Building Good Social Skills

Social skills are an essential element within our world and working on them can enrich your life for the better. There are different components to this that can help you be a social butterfly and have more satisfying life experiences. Today we want to talk about how to build good social skills.

Practice Awareness

Awareness in social settings is often the main factor that sets apart those with excellent social skills. Being mindful of your own actions along with how you talk to people is subtle yet very effective in this context. Awareness can give us context as to how other people around us feel which has an influence on how we are perceived. Being able to gauge someone’s emotional state by listening to the tone of their voice, or their word choice is one such way awareness can be applied. If someone is feeling sad for example, we may want to be more gentle with them compared to others. Likewise, if we notice someone in a group feels unwelcome we can make an active effort to be more inclusive and make them feel accepted. Self-awareness is also good as it can let us know when to let someone else have time to share their piece. Communication is a give and take and recognizing this can help make things easier on both sides.

Work on Charismatic Qualities

A key part of social skills is being able to have a combination of charismatic qualities. One of the most important qualities is being able to listen to others. Too often do people focus more on their response rather than actively hearing what other people are trying to convey. This is a problem as it doesn't encourage a healthy dialogue with this perspective. Instead, we ideally want to focus on patience along with building up others. Rapport is a social concept that involves establishing a history with the other person. This is good as it incentivizes good positive behavior while letting the other side know they matter. Charisma is about making the other person feel important and this alone can help you make friends while being authentic about what you love in others.

Be Willing to Accept Feedback

One concept that we want to take to heart as soon as possible is that we aren't perfect and that is okay. There are many social situations where things may not go as we expected such as a disagreement or an argument. While a healthy discussion is good sometimes we may need to take a step back and reconsider the situation. Sometimes people may give us feedback related to a situation and it may or may not always be right. It's good to consider the source itself and whether or not the other side may be trying to genuinely help you. Being receptive to feedback is good as it allows you to work on things you may not be consciously aware of. Social skills serve as the building blocks for our interactions with others and being able to practice these concepts can help you immensely.
