How Health Impacts Performance

Our health is one of the most important things in our lives and we need to take care of it. Sometimes we may be sick as a result of something external or by stress. This can be dangerous and we need to find ways to prevent that. Today we want to talk about how health impacts performance.

Performing Under Pressure

It's inevitable that there will be some things that can cause us stress and anxiety. A difficult test can cause many different emotions and it can happen to anyone. Understanding this however is good as we can both mitigate these feelings and manage them as they arise. Performing under pressure is one such example of this. There are two types of stress related to this. Acute stress is something caused by something happening in the moment which is tied together with pressure. There is also something called eustress which is a form of good stress that can motivate you. A mindset shift can help us change how we view stress and transform those feelings into eustress. This is good for our mentality as we can view pressure as a challenge to overcome rather than a culmination of negative emotions. Our health is dependent on how we look at traditionally difficult things and changing our mindset is a good first step.

Awareness of Our Needs

When we are hyper-focused on a task we may not see the bigger picture regarding our own health. This is apparent when doing more intense physical activity such as running a marathon or playing a team sport where many elements are fast-paced. Giving our all to these activities can be very rewarding. When we are doing these kinds of things we need to practice awareness as it can help keep ourselves healthy. Taking time to rest during these activities by either sitting down or hydrating is good as we need to be mindful of how much we push our bodies. Eating and sleeping properly can impact how well we do in a sport or during class. Our bodies are important in many ways and knowing what we need at any given time can help us.

Recognizing Our Worth

When it comes to our health there is something we need to understand, and that's our personal value. Valuing ourselves matters in so many ways as it can affect both our physical and mental health. We need to recognize that we as an individual are capable of bringing so much good to the world just by being here. We can demonstrate wonderful things such as kindness, gratitude, empathy, and respect for other people out there which in turn can make ourselves also feel better. Taking care of our health can let us perform great acts that can only be done when we feel at our peak. Being healthy can let us see our best qualities and remind us that we are worth our own investment. You matter and deserve the best both school and life has to offer and taking care of your health is the way to do that.
