Valuing Yourself

There are many important skills and qualities worth integrating into our lives but one thing that can often slip by is how much we value ourselves. Caring for others is a beautiful thing and we need to also reciprocate this with ourselves as we matter. Today we want to do a deep dive into the importance of valuing yourself.

What is Self-Worth?

Valuing ourselves can be a complicated matter but at the root of it all is our self-worth. This is effectively the combination of how we view ourselves in relation to the world and how we perceive how important we are. This can encompass how we feel emotionally toward ourselves along with how we view our skills and talents. It's important to remember that this is a perception of how we see ourselves and not necessarily factual or true in some cases. This is good to remember since there are times where we may have a negative self-image. When this happens we need to take time to accurately assess why we feel the way we do. Oftentimes, it is our perception that can be bringing us down which is why we need to address it when we can. A positive self-image is something that is necessary when it comes to both self-worth and valuing ourselves.

Love Yourself

Recently we've talked about an important concept known as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and this is very relevant to valuing ourselves. The third portion of the hierarchy specifically relates to love and while the value of others caring about us can't be expressed enough, loving ourselves needs to come first. Self-love provides us with a sense of care that is essential for both motivation and letting us know that we matter. One common issue that arises when many of us consider the idea of value, is that oftentimes we may seek validity from someone else as a means of doing this. It's good to realize that approval and validity while nice, aren't the sole determiner of our value. True value comes from within and realizing that you are more than someone else's opinion of you is a good mindset to have.

A Self-sustaining Mindset

Understanding the importance of ourselves while being balanced with how we view our own self-worth is good as it can improve our mindset. Two key things we want to cover are how valuing ourselves builds growth and a self-sustaining mindset. A growth mindset embraces that things such as failure or weakness can be used as an opportunity to learn. This ties into value as we may feel better when we try to challenge our ideas when they don't seem to work for us. This is important because there are times where we may feel complacent with where we are and may struggle to see the value we provide. During times like these, we need to turn to self-love and being kind to ourselves. Being able to properly see our value requires us to be gentle in the face of adversity and recognize that we do matter.
