Anger Can Motivate us to Change

One common misconception about negative emotions is that they are bad. This couldn't be further from the truth. These emotions are valid and carry a wealth of knowledge to be found within them. Let's take two of the more common negative emotions, anger, and sadness. Anger is perceived to be bad as many people associate it with loss of control or, too much energy in the wrong place. Anger is a natural reaction to things that can upset us such as feeling betrayed or being upset at an unfair situation. This is reasonable as there are some things that can frustrate us. This can vary from person to person but one benefit to this is that anger can be one of the most powerful motivators for change. This can be anger as a result of getting a low grade on a test, which can prompt us to do better on the next one. This can also be anger towards someone due to a miscommunication. A constructive thing to do in this instance would be calmly communicating this frustration to express yourself.

Sadness Can Make us Aware of Our Feelings

Sadness is often misinterpreted as something bad but it can inform us about how to lift our mood. If something makes us sad such as a situation, we can try putting ourselves in a more positive environment. This can include being in the presence of positive people. Being in a supportive environment can make us more willing to work on things and help us feel better. If anger incites action to change then sadness can be viewed as the ability to see what is wrong. This is incredibly helpful as it promotes mindfulness along with being gentle with any change we try to seek. Finding the balance between these can help enrich our lives.

Happiness Fosters Gratitude

Happiness is considered a positive emotion and one that directly benefits our well-being. Happiness can be either the result of an action or event working out in a good manner, or it can be a state of mind. This emotion is good as it reminds us that there are many things to be grateful for. Things such as having a stable roof over our heads, clean water, and good food all contribute to our health in subtle ways that we may not be aware of. Large celebrations are indicative of our joy towards our accomplishments which is good. We deserve to be happy and being okay with all of our feelings matters. While each emotion is fleeting, being okay regardless of how we feel can lead to more stability in our lives.
