Establishing Healthy Boundaries

Throughout our lives, there are many different lines we have to draw when it comes to our personal choices. This can be within relationships, along with our physical and emotional health. Being able to clearly define these is important which is why today we want to talk about establishing healthy boundaries.

Interpersonal Relationships

There are many people that we will encounter in our lives which is good to keep in mind. While we can't share the same level of closeness with everyone, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is a good thing to establish mutual respect between others as we are all people at the end of the day. There are instances where people may cross that line and it's good to recognize when we feel that is the case. We can take several different routes depending on how severe it is. One method is to try distancing yourself from someone if you can't seem to come to an agreement and assuming the situation allows it. Knowing when someone is toxic and protecting yourself from that is sometimes the only option. Other choices are to communicate something to them calmly and rationally while being mindful of their feelings. Some people may not know if they cross the line and that is okay. Likewise, we need to be aware of whether we are being too controlling as that can alienate others and cause harm. It's a delicate balance and finding that can help.

Physical Health

Our physical health is something that fuels us on a day-to-day basis. There are many things that we may compromise on such as sleep and hunger and addressing these sooner rather than later is key to establishing healthy boundaries. Some good things to do are setting aside a time of the day to stop doing activities to focus on winding down. This is good as we need proper relaxation to sleep. From a nutrition perspective, some good boundaries to have are setting aside a portion of what you eat for anything. Rather than having high-calorie foods whenever we want, we need to have discipline with what we eat as it can make us sick if we don't take care of our bodies. We also want to have enough time for exercise. This can be done with scheduling as well to keep track of when we have free time for it. Being efficient with how we use our time and resources can both help our bodies stay healthy.

Mental Health

Lastly, mental health boundaries are extremely important to consider as it affects us in a multitude of ways. Some good strategies for doing this involve limiting your consumption of media that affects you negatively. While being informed is advised, there needs to be moderation with what we read as there are days where we may not have the mental capacity to handle something difficult. This can also be said for relationships that require a lot of energy. Being able to say no when you need a mental health day or just time to yourself can make all the difference. While we may still have to be physically present, we can consciously choose how to react and where to spend that time and effort mentally. Boundaries are needed to help make it through difficult situations and knowing how to set them can increase the quality of your life.
