Metacognitive Practices And Happiness

Having a healthy set of tools to get you through all the challenges we face is incredibly important. As students, we're constantly learning new things and finding creative solutions. A great tool is using metacognition to help sustain your overall happiness. Today we want to see some ways that students can apply this and why it's worth the effort.

Recognizing Thought Patterns

Given that metacognition is thinking about thinking, it's safe to say that our thought patterns are worth taking a look at. Depending on what we're feeling or going through we might fall into certain patterns that aren't constructive. It takes a lot of courage to acknowledge whether we're in a good frame of mind and acknowledgment is the first step towards positive change. Taking time out of our day to sit down with our thoughts and simply observe can give us a means of accepting our thoughts without judgment. It's also worth asking why we think some things and what causes certain thoughts to keep coming back. The benefit of doing this is that it can make us more conscious of the things we want to work on while still being patient in the process.

Reflecting On What You Can Do

There are a lot of things in life that we do and don't have control over and ultimately it's worth focusing on the former. One of the biggest reasons for this is that it lets you work on personal empowerment and see how your actions can shape your life for the better. We can apply metacognition not just to our thoughts but to our actions as well as what we were thinking of when we did them. This approach can help us stay grounded in reality and look for creative methods of handling things such as stress better. We can also use it to help us think about what makes us feel fulfilled so that we can dedicate more time to doing those things. Time is a precious resource and we owe it to ourselves to have our thoughts align in a manner that respects the things we value.

Looking At Things From A Different Perspective

Our thoughts can uplift us if we give them the chance. It's good to consider that our thoughts give us the framework for how we view the world and we want them to be in a good sense of alignment. When we focus on balancing the different areas of our lives we're able to fulfill our needs and wants better. It's good to recognize that our thoughts can't hurt us and that we need to be kind and compassionate to ourselves. Both metacognition and meditation help us slow down so that we can be okay with being alone with our thoughts. Solitude and learning how to love ourselves can teach us how to prioritize self-care while also promoting good habits in the process.
